Why does my iPhone screen keep dimming with auto-brightness off?

I’m sitting on a plane right now and my iPhone’s screen has been dimming. The auto-brightness setting is off, but my phone keeps getting dimmer and dimmer. I’ve tried turning it back up, but it just keeps getting darker. Why does this happen?

Turn off auto-brightness.

To turn off Auto-Brightness, open the Settings app and tap Display & Brightness. From there, toggle on “Auto-Brightness” to disable it.

You can also check to make sure Auto-Brightness is turned off by going back to the same screen as above and tapping “Automatic Brightness.” If you see a blue circle with an arrow pointing down (as seen below), your phone has automatically set its brightness at night or in dimmer conditions, which could be causing your display problems.

Check your color filter settings.

If you’re an iOS user and you’ve turned off auto-brightness, your screen may be dimming for a different reason.

Color filters are available in Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations. They are designed to help people with low vision or color blindness by making the screen easier to see and understand. The color filter can make it easier for some people to read text on their device at night or in bright sunlight, but it might also interfere with how the iPhone’s Auto Brightness feature works. If you notice that your iPhone’s brightness keeps changing even after turning off Auto Brightness, try turning off Color Filters.

If this doesn’t fix the problem, then we recommend taking your device in for repair because there could be something wrong with its software or hardware (like corrosion).

Restart your iPhone.

Restarting your iPhone is one of the quickest and easiest ways to fix many software problems. If you’re experiencing any issues with your device, try restarting it before applying any other fixes.

A restart may not be necessary for every problem, but it’s an easy thing to do and can save you time down the road if it does fix something. Restarting your iPhone will not delete any data or cause you to lose anything—you can restart by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time until you see an apple logo (or two).

Reset all settings.

If you’re having trouble with your iPhone screen dimming, try resetting all settings. Here’s how:

  • Go to Settings > General > Reset.
  • Select Reset All Settings and confirm that you want to proceed by tapping Reset in the top right of the confirmation dialogue box that appears on your phone’s screen. Your iPhone will restart and all settings will be reset; this includes Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Home Screen layout, brightness level settings, etc. This process does not delete data from your device or apps like photos or messages; it simply resets everything back to default values so that you can start fresh again if needed!

Take your iPhone to the Apple Store.

Sometimes, our iPhones and iPads are just acting weird. Sometimes the problem is a simple one: you turned your brightness all the way down and then forgot to turn it back up again. Other times, though, there’s more to it than that—and if you want to figure out what exactly is going on with your phone (or tablet), it’s best to take it in for a checkup at an Apple Store.

If there’s an issue with your device that isn’t related to brightness settings but rather something more serious like water damage or malfunctioning hardware components, bringing in your phone can save time and money by helping Apple diagnose and fix any problems before they get worse. And if nothing’s wrong at all? Well then maybe they’ll give it a new paint job! Either way: It costs nothing but some time; might as well get everything checked out while they’re at it!
